New Becker O5 rotary vane vacuum pumps for food packaging

Becker is expanding its range of rotary vane vacuum pumps in the O5 series by the sizes O5.10, O5.16 and O5.21. These pumps have been specially developed for applications in the food packaging industry. The pumps have a maximum flow rate of 10 to 23.5 m³/h.

The extremely compact design of the new vacuum pumps is one of their design features: All three pumps have a construction height of only 160 mm. This opens up the possibility for manufacturers, especially of table-top packaging machines, to build machines with smaller dimensions and to achieve better ergonomics. The almost identical dimensions also allow a modular machine setup: All three pumps can be optionally integrated in the same machine. This gives the machine builder flexibility and also gives the user additional options when selecting the machine.

The pump design is also based on modularity: All three models can be optionally equipped with a small or large oil tank and motors with a different power output. From the perspective of the machine manufacturer, this makes it possible, for example, to offer the option of a premium version with a bigger oil tank and a correspondingly larger air de-oiling element, in addition to a compact basic version with a smaller oil tank, which enables not only longer maintenance intervals but also increased water vapour tolerance. The oil tanks can be split for easy, residue-free cleaning of the tanks.

Thanks to the modular design, Becker can also offer the user of the new vacuum pumps various options for the position of the oil filler opening, oil drain and oil sight glass. This simplifies both the service process and the 1 to 1 substitution of the O5 series in existing machine designs. The innovative and patented twist-lock on the air de-oiling element ensures quick replacement and maximum serviceability.

Regardless of the size and equipment chosen, the pumps in the O5 series stand out with their robust design and highly reliability. Neither low ambient temperatures or contaminants in the oil or frequent start-stop cycles without a long lead time affect their service life. Another feature is the quiet operation, which is achieved by the special geometry of the discharge valve.

With these features, the new Becker rotary vane vacuum pumps in the O5 series, first introduced at the IFFA 2019, are ideally suited for the vacuum packaging of fresh or perishable products (meat, fish, sausage and cheese) as well as for other applications in which reliable and efficient vacuum generation is required.

One of the pilot users of the O5 series is VAMA Maschinenbau GmbH in Wilpoldsried, a leading supplier of vacuum chamber machines for the food industry and other user industries. VAMA considers the requirements that the company places on vacuum pumps to be implemented very well in the O5 series: Managing director Kurt Hörburger: “We need pumps that are characterized by compact dimensions, running smoothness, quiet operation and high reliability. The rotary vane pumps from Becker have this broad property profile.” That's why VAMA already uses the new pumps: Gebr. Becker's IFFA booth exhibited a compact VAMA table-top vacuum chamber machine, which generates the vacuum with an O5.16 type pump.

What does mobile service at Becker mean in practice during day-to-day customer operations?

To find out, we spent a day with one of our service technicians: from the initial preparations to the actual service call at the customer’s site. Armed with a camera and plenty of questions, we got to see just how much expertise, experience, organization, and attention to detail go into a typical service visit.

Starting point for the service call: Gennebreck Training Center

We kicked off the morning at our Training Center, Gennebreck. There, we met our service technician, Marc Rassbach, to start the day together. Before heading to the customer’s site, we took the time to conduct an interview and a detailed look inside his service vehicle.

It quickly became clear: The vehicle is far more than just a means of transportation. It serves as a mobile spare parts warehouse and is equipped with everything needed for maintenance and service calls, from tools and spare parts to oils and filters. Every component has its designated place so that work on-site can be carried out efficiently and in an organized manner.

In the interview, our expert technician talked about his daily work routine, the various applications he deals with, and how important good preparation is for a smooth service call. “Every customer is different; every application has its own unique characteristics,” he explained. That is precisely why it is crucial to understand the technology, but also to keep the customer’s processes in mind.

Together to the customer Fertinger Tubes

After the preparations, we set off together to the customer Fertinger Tubes. The purpose of the service call was to perform maintenance on two oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pumps of the U 4.70 type. These pumps are used in a crane application for lifting and moving finished aluminum components: a safety-critical application where reliability is the top priority.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed. After a brief orientation, an employee accompanied us to the pumps. It was already clear here: A successful service visit also depends on a trusting partnership between the customer and the service technician.

Routine Maintenance – step by step

The service technician performed the maintenance exactly as he would during his regular workday. For us, this meant: no staged scenes, but real-world service in action.

First, he assessed the condition of the pumps. He then inspected the air-oil element and replaced it. An oil change was also part of the maintenance routine. Every step was performed with precision and confidence - the result of experience, training, and consistent hands-on practice.

Throughout the work, Marc consistently explained what he was monitoring and why certain steps were especially important. In crane applications in particular, a reliable and consistent vacuum supply is essential for safe and efficient operation.

Regular maintenance not only helps prevent costly downtime for the customer, but also extends the service life of the pumps - making it a sound and economical investment.

The pump in action

One of the highlights of the visit was seeing the pump in action. Using vacuum technology, the crane lifted large aluminum components with impressive precision - an impressive example of how Becker products support safe and efficient industrial operations every day.

It was fascinating to observe how seamlessly technology, people, and processes work together in this environment. For the service technician, it is simply part of the daily routine; for outsiders, it offers a clear and tangible insight into where and how vacuum technology is applied in real-world industry.

Once the maintenance work was complete, the job was not yet finished.

Together, we also followed up on the visit. This included documenting the work performed and reviewing it with the customer.

During the concluding discussion, it became clear how important this follow-up is: it provides clarity for the customer and ensures that all measures are properly recorded. On-site invoicing is also possible. Transparency and traceability are central components of the Becker service philosophy here as well.

About the day:

Every year on June 23rd, the world celebrates International Women in Engineering Day to help recognise the inspiring female engineers across the globe and help showcase their incredible work in the sector. Starting in 2014, the day was founded by the Women’s Engineering Society, and a few years later, was rewarded with UNESCO patronage to become the internationally recognised day that it is now.

A JOURNEY AS A FEMALE IN ENGINEERING: WITH MELISSA FROM BECKER UK

Our UK Market Development Manager, Melissa Kelly-Jones, has worked at BECKER UK for five and a half years and continues to break down barriers each day; from starting in internal sales and advancing her way through to marketing and technical external sales, Melissa now covers all revenue streams for the industry - including service, new pump sales and centralised vacuum systems.

Whilst engineering has historically been male-dominated, Melissa says the industry is changing – and fast. “I enjoy working in this field”, she says. “I don't particularly think about the gender split, although I have been the only female in the room on occasion, but I do notice more ladies coming through, whether that be colleagues or customers”.

Over the years, she’s sometimes had to work harder to prove her expertise, often feeling the need to explain her answers more than her male counterparts. But that’s happening far less now, thanks to her 25+ years of experience, growing support for women in industry, and a shift in attitudes, funding and education.

“I do notice more ladies coming through, whether that be colleagues or customers. However, we (ladies) are very outnumbered, but times are changing and have been for a few years".

Exploring Nature and Nurturing Young Minds: A Wonderful Day Volunteering with HEY Children’s University

On Wednesday 25th June 2025, two of the BECKER UK team members – Paula, our Charity Coordinator, and Evie, our Marketing Assistant – spent a heartwarming day volunteering at the beautiful Thwaite Gardens in Cottingham for a group of Year 5 pupils from Oldfleet Primary School. The day formed part of an exciting EcoHub experience, brilliantly run by Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) Children’s University and was all about connecting children to nature and encouraging curiosity about the world around them.

Starting the Day with Curiosity and Games

A friendly greeting and an interesting overview of biodiversity kicked off the morning. Through games and conversations, the HEY Children's University team sparked interest in the concept in an entertaining manner. Everyone laughed and learnt as they matched various wildlife terms during a game of bingo with a nature theme. The children had a glimpse of the vital role forests play in sustaining life on Earth through forest-based learning activities.

There was a lively atmosphere, lots of questions from the kids, and infectious excitement. Paula and Evie immediately joined in, supporting the groups as they applied what they had learnt. They started to view nature as a living, breathing system of which they are a part, rather than merely as something that exists outside.

Touring the Gardens: Nature Comes to Life

We then took a guided tour of the vast Thwaite Gardens. The gardens provided the ideal natural classroom, filled with a variety of plants and hidden wildlife. The kids gained knowledge about various habitats, the interactions between plants and animals, and the importance of biodiversity to the wellbeing of our planet.

Watching the pupils identify animals, pose intelligent queries, and be in awe of the simple beauty of a butterfly landing close by or discovering a wildflower they had never seen before was fascinating.

Adventure and Exploration - The Wildlife Hunt

Next up was one of the favourite parts of the day, the wildlife spotting challenge, following a brief 20-minute break during which the kids ran around to burn off some energy. In order to find evidence of animal life, such as feathers, nests, tracks, and trails, groups set out to investigate various parts of the gardens.

Everyone took pride in their findings, with some stooped in the grass to examine footprints and others closely examined leaves for indications of caterpillars. Their enjoyment of being free to wander and explore was evident. It was enjoyable to see their self-assurance and independence increase.

Learning About Ecosystems

We returned indoors for an interactive session on ecosystems and the food chain and investigated the connections between humans, animals, and plants, the kids enjoyed listening to brief films and group discussions.

One of the day's most well-liked activities followed: a cooperative game in which the kids constructed their own ecosystems using counters. We soon realised we had some future environmental scientists! As ecosystems took shape and strategies were discussed, the room was alive with friendly competition, teamwork, and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Inspiring the Future with Careers in Sustainability

We helped the kids understand how their love of the environment could eventually lead to fulfilling careers that make a difference by introducing them to careers in sustainability as the day came to an end. Many of the kids were excited about the possibilities, which ranged from environmental education to renewable energy and conservation efforts.

Each pupil proudly wore the well-earned sticker they were given before they left. We got together for a group picture with the BECKER teddy bear, which the kids adore and call JimBob and BioBob. It was the ideal way to finish off a wonderful day.

We’ve got good news. It might not be a fault with the machine itself. It’s unlikely it’s the materials you’re using - and there’s nothing wrong with your skills as a woodworker.

The problem might be your vacuum.

A poor, weak or inadequate vacuum can cause a whole host of problems that often get blamed on other reasonings. So, if you’re experiencing any of these issues, then your vacuum pump should be the first thing you investigate:

1. Poor quality cuts

If your vacuum is weak, your boards can slip during cutting, resulting in poor quality, irregular or inaccurate cuts. This results in wastage, which could otherwise be avoided.

2. Chipping of boards

If your vacuum isn’t holding your board in place with enough force, and the boards move or vibrate during machining, this can cause the board to chip. Again, this causes wastage that could otherwise be avoided.

3. Damaged tooling

This festive season, BECKER UK was proud to support a range of local charities, helping to spread joy, kindness and a little Christmas magic throughout Hull. Working closely with these groups has helped bring smiles to faces and make a meaningful difference in our community during this time of year. Our contributions reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting the local community, which is something we look forward to continuing in 2026 and beyond.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA:

With our partnered charity, Hull and East Yorkshire Children's University, 3 of the BECKER team visited a local primary school to deliver gifts to the children. Tim, Paula and Viktoria spent the morning present buying and wrapping before suprising children with Santa Claus himself!

It was a truly magical morning, filled with singing, dancing, laughter and plenty of happy little faces on all the children. They enjoyed breakfast and got to make a wish on a magic chocolate coin before sitting down to listen to a story read by Santa. Finally, there was the excitement of present time which brought plenty of smiles all round.

This morning was more than just a Breakfast with Santa; it was about creating an event for each child to feel special and have a sense of belonging. All children deserve excitement, magic and memories, regardless of their circumstances, and BECKER UK is proud to play such an important part in this event. It was incredibly humbling to see firsthand how impactful this event is to some of our local children who may not otherwise recieve a gift this Christmas.

SHOEBOX APPEAL:

We donated 13 filled shoeboxes to Hull Age UK, each box was carefully filled with festive treats with the aim of bringing comfort and cheer to an older person who may otherwise feel lonely during the Christmas period.

For many older adults in our community, Christmas can be a difficult and isolating time so we hope that these shoeboxes, filled with warm essentials, treats and a handwritten message are a small way to show that they are valued, remembered and cared for.

The aim of the charity is to deliver to more than 1000 people who face Christmas alone this year and we are proud to be part of something that brings joy to many.

OTHER CHARITY DONATIONS:

Paisley Primary School: We donated toys for the Christmas Fair at a local school, located in a deprived area of Hull, where the school was extremely grateful for the items, which will help ensure pupils can enjoy the festive season and take part in celebrations alongside their friends.

The Deep: We donated a raffle prize of a family voucher to The Deep, a local aquarium, which included a Penguin Adoption Pack to Downright Special who are a small charity building a brighter future for children and young people with Down Syndrome. They support over 150 children in our area and are the only local organisation offering specialist support for people with Down Syndrome. We hope the lucky child who won our donated prize gets to meet their very own adopted penguin in 2026!

As another year comes to a close, these initiatives reflect BECKER's continued commitment to supporting our local community and making a positive difference. From creating magical moments for children and young people, to offering comfort to older members of the community, each donation was made with care and compassion. Stuart Rheingeld has spent over two decades with Becker UK, with his role as Southern Service Manager serving as an interesting case study for working life within the British Mechanical Engineering industry.

Becker UK Ltd is the UK’s sole distributor of all Becker vacuum pumps, compressors, side channel blowers and turbine blowers in the UK.

Stuart Rheingeld has been in the Mechanical Engineering Industry for thirty years, with the latest twenty-one years of these being shared with Becker UK.

One of his key responsibilities within the current role of Southern Service Manager includes giving support and advice to Becker UK's customers. This may be in planned routine

maintenance with existing customers or breakdown situations that may arise throughout the day.

Speaking about the demands of the role, Stuart said that "Whatever the job, it is imperative that there is a quick turnaround to limit disruption to all parties concerned."

One of the biggest benefits of this role is the variety of skills that can be learned. Some of the key skills which are gained/required as a Southern Service Manager at Becker UK include:

At first glance, an ejector vacuum system may appear to be a cheaper option than an electromechanical vacuum pump when looking only at the initial purchase price. For example: The technical comparison in the graphic below shows that at a vacuum level of approximately. -600mbar (approx. -18inHg), which is typical for pick and place applications. A single Becker VT4.16 60 Hz can replace a combination of 3 ejectors from a common manufacturer.

This typical combination of ejectors requires 5.69 Nl/s of compressed air at 6 bar, which corresponds to an electrical energy consumption of 2.28 kW. With the same volume flow, a VT4.16 has a power consumption of 0.75kW at 60Hz. As a result, the electric BECKER vacuum pump is about three times as efficient in continuous operation.

With rising energy prices, this usage is a significant part of total operating costs for manufacturers. For efficient and economical vacuum generation, electromechanical vacuum pumps are recommended.

Join us in celebrating International Women’s Day, as we hear from female voices from across the globe. Each colleague has kindly offered their thoughts on how Becker encourages them in their careers.

A prominent day in our calendars each year, International Women's Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

For Becker, this is a time to reflect on both the impact and triumphs that the strong women in our global organisation are making - each-and-every day.

Although we recognise this marked day will never be enough to celebrate the capabilities of women, Becker works hard to ensure that opportunities for learning, progression and personal and professional development are offered year-round.

We hear, appreciate, and recognise the powerful female ability in our team and across all departments.

Whilst International Women’s Day is a celebration - this day also marks a truly important call to action for accelerating women's equality. We understand that women are the minority in our industry, which is why speaking about inclusion and opportunity in Engineering is so important; also, not forgetting the importance of retaining female talent.

Becker UK To Be Presented With Manufacturing Hero Award

Becker UK is excited to announce that we have been named 'Manufacturing Hero' by the distinguished Made in Group.

The Manufacturing Heroes recognition is a campaign set up by Made in Group, to celebrate manufacturers within the membership group who have demonstrated strength in a time of crisis.

Trade associated Made in Group began this to highlight the achievements of UK manufacturers who worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, which was started with those who participated in the UK Ventilator Challenge to help save lives. Made in Group have voiced their view that government procurement for the NHS had failed over a preference to source from overseas suppliers and overlooked the quality manufacturing talent domestically.

Ultimately, all ‘Manufacturing Heroes’ will be presented with a specially commissioned badge manufactured in the world-renowned Midlands Jewellery Qtr by Thomas Fattorini Ltd, a company based in Birmingham and who were granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. Many of these recognition ceremonies have taken place in 2021, with Made in Group planning to continue the recognition ceremony into 2022 with more companies to be announced in the near future.
